Why is table tennis so popular in China?

How and table tennis, why is it so popular in China and Asia in general? I’m guessing that might have something to do with Britain’s involvement in that part of the world and the limited space due to population density. However, this is pure speculation. I would be interested to know any information on the subject.

I feel that table tennis became more famous in China because of the high population. The pollution levels in China are sky high. So table tennis is an indoor game that can keep the people in China away form pollution and also take less space. I think that thats the main reason for why t.t is so popular in china..
