Open Question: Advantages of hitting down the middle in racquet sports?

Eg.like tennis,badminton n table tennis. what’s the point of hitting down the middle. your opponent is either going to be in the middle,left or right.
If he’s on the middle, hitting to the mid is just stupid cos you’re literally handing him the ball/shuttlecock so you should hit left or right.

If he is on the right side, wouldnt it be better to hit the left side than the mid so he would take longer to reach the ball/shuttlecock? vice versa for if opponent is on left side.

So is there any advantage at all to hit down the middle? Or is it really just pointless and you have bad control of your shots.
