The American Ping-Pong team was in Nagoya, Japan for the World Table Tennis Championship because they had received a shocking invitation from the Chinese Ping-Pong team. The invitation offered them a visit to the People’s Republic of China. It was called “The Ping heard round the world.”. This was shocking because not one group of Americans had been invited to China since 1949.
They had been invited because the Chinese believed that they could attempt to make their hostile neighbors into possible allies. President Nixon had written. “We simply cannot afford to leave China outside the family of nations.” So the United States gladly accepted the opportunity.

The events leading up to the encounter began when and American Ping-Pong player, Glenn Cowan, missed his team bus after his practice in Nagoya during the 31st World Table Tennis Championship. As Cowan searched for his team bus,which was a pointless task since the buss had already left, a Chinese player gestered to get on his Chinese team bus. After talking through an interpreter to the Chinese players, Zhuang Zedong intoduced himself and gave Cowen a silk-screen portrait of Huangshan Mountains, a famous product from Hangzhou. Cowan wanted to return the favor with another gift but he only found a comb. Instead of giving the comb he waited to get a better gift. Glenn Cowan later bought a T-shirt wit a red, white and blue, peace sign flag with the words “Let It Be,” for Zhuang Zedong.
